"Freedom to live and to think about life for its own sake is important and even essential to a child. Since we can't know what knowledge will be most needed in the future, it is senseless to try to teach it in advance. Instead, we should try to turn out people who love learning so much and learn so well that they will be able to learn whatever needs to be learned." -John Holt.
I agree with this wholeheartedly! Each year, we have interns, mostly young graduates from Ivy League universities, who intern with us for 3-9 months. They have to do unpaid work, but they usually come with a grant from their university or some other foundation. They always tell us that they go home changed, that they don't take things like education, electricity, water, freedom and the right to vote for granted anymore, after working with asylum-seekers who lack even the most basic amenities and rights. They are changed persons by the time they return to university.
