Banana Dip 13 August 2015

We were served banana with En's banana dip she made the day before. It was froze in the freezer overnight. The base of the dip was honey.
She asked,  "Can honey be frozen ? "

BASF kids' lab 9 November 2011

Chemistry kids's lab at 1 Utama Mall sponsored and organised by BASF.

The kids putting on apron and safety goggles.
There were four experiments altogether.

1.Water absorption.

2. Filtration.

3. Chromatography

4. Make your own body lotion.

Make Fossil with clay and Testing for Carbon @ Pusat Sains Negara 5 May 2011

Thursday 12pm
Thanks to yl, we got another trip of science experiment at PSN.

We started with making fossil activity.
Press the cockle on plasticine.

Remove the cockle.

Mix clay with a bit of water and add food colouring.
Apply the paste on the cockle-shaped plasticine. Let it dry.  While waiting for the paste to dry, we did a testing for carbon in some specimen.

5 specimen - cockle, egg shells, coral, stone and charcoal.

Add 10ml of vinegar. See the reaction.
Coral formed lots of gas bubbles.

Eggs shells, coral and cockle contain calcium carbonate, which reacts with vinegar to form carbon dioxide.

Direct the gas to Bromothymol blue (chemical in blue). If the gas emitted is carbon dioxide, Bromothymol blue will turn yellow.

En Hui blew into Bromothymol blue with a straw and the chemical turned to yellow.

The beautiful fossil. Not ours. :)

Litmus Test at Home 4 May 2011

Looking at the purple cabbage which we prepared for dinner and lemon which we added to our fruit juice, I recalled the home-made litmus test.

Crush the cabbage with some hot water which create some purple-blue colour liquid. Divide into three cups.
Add lemon to the first cup and it turns pink = alkali.
And if you add some baking soda to the second cup,  it turns blue = acid.

Chemistry Experiments @PSN 15 April 2011

Friday 9am
I took the Chemistry event as an opportunity to introduce EnHui to chemicals and chemistry. These are some of the experiments at Nature Secret Lab.

Electroplating experiment.

 Latex hardening.

The students let shorty Hui stood in front when she voiced up that she couldn't see.

When you mix the right chemical to the left, it turned into nylon string.

It has to be added one drop at a time.

Nylon string.

Showing the effect of excessive CO2 that causes temperature increment.

EnHui were given a chance to hands-on, mixing three chemical reagent that will analyse the amount of nitrate.

Test tube B showed higher amunt of Nitrate.

Below are the experiments from lab at level 3
Dry ice and a few drop of water, inflated the glove.

Cute

We did this Toysmith Volcano Making Kit at home before. Mix baking soda and vinegar. Optional food colouring for coloured-lava effect.

En did this experiment at Petrosains and won a prize for the highest blast off rocket. This rocket preparation is easier compare to the Petrosains's rocket. Material : Panadol Soluble and Water. Cover and shake it. Wait for the rocket to blast off.

This is the rocket experiment En did at Petrosains.

an empty vitamin bottle.

Same concept. Baking soda into the balloon. Vinegar into a bottle. Cover the balloon mouth over the bottle. The gas inflates the balloon.

Hui said 'See, same colour!'

EnHui did the Column Chromatography experiment. It created many layers of colours, showing different density of each colour.

Lemon battery is the similar one to our Toysmith 4 M Potato Clock # 4568.
And checking the PH of red cabbage.

the surface tension of the liquid colouring kept it together. A drop of detergent broke the surface tension of the colourings, creating a beautiful effect, shown in video below.

Hui love this experiment. She did it again and again.

Video of detergent breaking the surface tension of colours.

She discovered that, when she shook the plate, the milk changed into brown colour.

Clean Water Science 10 April 2011

Sunday night
Dad did a Green Science Clean Water Science Kit with EnHui.
En's drawing on the project.

They got to see how water, that were mixed with dirt and oil, can be "cleaned" through a series of filters made by gravel, sand, carbon and filter paper. The transparent containers made it possible for them to watch the filtration process.

Mixing oil, water and detergent 8 April 2011

Oil and water cannot be friends. Detergent helped them joined together.

Making Cincau 6 March 2011

En- Mommy, when are you going to make 'cincau'?
Me- I am tired. Why don't you make for us?
En- I need help carrying the pot of water.
Me- Okay, just let me know when you need help.

The cincau was left in the boiling water too long, that it melted.
Thanks En!
