Hot Air Balloon Ride at Putrajaya 24 February 2012

Hui rested on the inflater fan while watching how a balloon basket and burner were set up.

Checking on the propane burner.

A fan is used to blow cold air into the envelope.

The cold air slightly inflated the balloon.

The balloon getting its shapes. :)

Interior view.

Love the knots on the basket.

Burner flame heated up the cold air inside.

Hot air rises.

We jumped onto the balloon.

Off we go.

Captured from within the basket.

Making spectroscope @Janda Baik, with Starfield Instrument Supply 23 July 2011

She is Hui Chiek, a pleasant lady who shared generously and passionately about stars and planets. I can't help but like her. :)
She explained on how to make a spectroscope to the group of audience.
A spectroscope is an instrument that revelas the colour components of a light source.
We joined a stargazing trip organised by Starfield.

Material needed,
1. A cardbox which will be folded into a box. 2. A piece of small mirror. 3. A tiny disc 4. a piece of thin paper.

Glue and fold the cardbox into a box.

Stick the disc (left) and the mirror(right) in the interior of the box.

A completed spectroscope. The rainbow will be reflected on the thin piece of paper.

Science Fun Toys, Experiment with Air @Pusat Sains Negara 19 July 2011

The lab.

Three easy-to-do toys.

1.Flying saucer.
Fold the paper plates to create lines for cutting.

Cut into 8 flaps of similar sizes.

2. Hoopster
Tape two paper rings of one small and one big size on the straw.

3. Parachute.
Tie a string at the end of all four corners of a small piece of plastic bag.
Gather the four strings together and tie a knot.
Stick a small size of plasticine at the knot.

Conductor or Non-Conductor & Heat Transfer 30 June 2011

Lab experiment at Pusat Sains Negara. Duration 35 minutes.

The age group of our children is between 2 to 7.
Maximum 20 children.
RM4 per person for PSN non member and RM2 for PSN member.
Email Pn Maznah - maznahsadini@psn.gov.my

En Hui and D took turn to assemble the electrical circuit.

conductor or non-conductors?

Heat transfer experiment.
Each iron, copper and glass rod were attached with a small with an identical pinch of plasticine.
Light up spirit lamp and observe which plasticine melt first.

Copper is the best conductor of heat.

Hui's worksheet.

I like this part the most.
All children hollered " I want I want !" and were so eager to line up for a PSN button badge!

Bird Watching with MNS, at Kampung Kemensah, Hulu Klang 29 May 2011

It was an early Sunday, 7 in morning, with MNS Selangor for birdwatching which took place at a lowland secondary forest at Kg Kemensah. Little did I know, there is a serene and quiet little village with a river running through it,  at the back of our Zoo Negara. For direction, simply turn left from Zoo Entrance A and go straight till you arrive Teratak Angah.

The bird enthusiasts immediately set up their high tech binoculars the moment they got off their cars and . This photo was taken at the parking area.  The group watched from the left, trailing the bird to the right (below).

I simply admire their love and interest in birds.

we walked up the forest after a short briefing,

This is the entrance to the forest, which is near to Teratak Angah Chalet entrance.

They stopped, watched at the same spot for a moment and moved up. The trip lasts for 3 long hours.
I could hear 'Red Eye Bul Bul' and followed by the direction of the bird and everyone would aim their binoculars to the position.

This gadget on the left provides crystal clear image of the bird. When I looked through it, I was awed by this magnificent tool and its view.

wanna hear the soothing chirping sound?

Shortly after, Hui found the sand more fun. She created fish-sand, so she said, with her shoes. She spent a great deal of time decorating it. We both fell behind. While Hui did her sand craft, I simply listened to the birds' chirping and watched them flew above us.

An hour later, En too had enough of the birds. :)

A water surface tension experiment which clearly illustrates what is it about.

Geography & Science group learning 24 May 2011

 Tuesday morning
Our first foray into Geography was by introducing Malaysia by showing it on the globe (at least we attempted to) and colouring on a printed flag of Malaysia. Hui did the two things she loves -puzzle (of a Malaysia map) and colouring.

Science experiment on water surface tension.

Find the hidden colour inside the ink

I found it fun, having an outdoor classroom and sitting down on the floor. Children did it freely without any restrictions.
Discussion of the school play without adult interruption.

At home, En told me "I have a problem. H and I wants a different way of school play."
I replied "You need to discuss with her, combine both of your ideas and come out with a joint play. Some ideas of yours might be taken out or changed. If you can't come into a conclusion, maybe you can think of a separate school play with two different directors. Take turn to direct the play.  Just like Wayang is directed by Sabera Shaik only.
En gaily said  "Thanks!, Mom"

My intention of forming/joining this group learning is for the kids to experience working with others, expose them to the concept of teamwork and responsibility. En experienced her first taste of teamwork.

Laser Pegs Lighted Construction Kits Tractor 15 May 2011

Check out Laser Pegs  (thanks so much Sc and J)
Such amazing toy. It got EnHui spent time on it, fidgeting, figuring and admiring the lights.

Science Experiments at home 13 May 2011

Hui wanted to do experiment one after another. I have to plead for a break and she said "five minutes". Below are the two of the few experiments we did.

water skater.
Float matchstick on the surface of water. Drop detergent on one side of the matchstick. Instantly it will zip across the surface.

"when the flame is dim, remove the bottle and the flame will grow again, "so they said
